LOWER DANUBE. Uncertain tribe. Circa 300-250 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 13.87 g, 2 h), imitating an issue of Philip II of Macedon from Amphipolis. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠΠ-ΟΥ Young jockey, holding palm frond in his right hand and reins in his left, riding horse to right; below horse, thunderbolt above 𐊈; below horse's foreleg, dolphin right. Dembski 1015. Flesche -. Lanz 354. OTA 10. Preda pl. I, 5. SNG ANS (Macedonia II), 816 var. (same obverse die, but differing symbol below horse's foreleg). For prototype, cf. Le Rider pl. 48, 4-5. A nicely toned piece of very attractive early Celtic style. Slightly rough and with minor marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.
